An adrenaline-fueled disco tribute that highlights generational disconnect and the clawing youthful urges of wanting to move out and move on. While elements of the design transformed to capture iconic locations in and around Bay Ridge, the Brooklyn bridge remains stationary throughout to serve as a reminder of the expectations to uphold tradition and the pressures of feeling stuck in one’s circumstance. The ensemble pushed the momentum through high-energy disco sequences, only slowing to allow Tony and Stephanie to explore their relationship outside the doors of 2001 Odyssey.
“They never stop, they never think, they never know about that guy...just sittin’ there…forever.”
- Tony Manero - Saturday Night Fever
Reviews
“The bacchanalian spirit of the 70s, along with the harsh realities of the working-class at the end of the age of prosperity, clash but transform into the glamorous, yet wanting world of “Saturday Night Fever” in director Patrick Campbell’s vision of the disco-era anthem. Campbell’s Bay Ridge Brooklyn alternates between the decaying nuclear family of the Manero household and the glitzy promise of the 2001 Odyssey night club.
Backdrops are earth toned but not natural and forgiving as their organic matter belies a weakness to the elements of social change that Campbell highlights skillfully with amping up the tension when the music isn’t meant for dance.”
